A skilled writer, Black held a position as Notes Editor on the American Intellectual Property Law Association Quarterly Journal, aiding students in the research and writing of their intellectual property-based scholarly notes.

Black previously held positions at the Council of the District of Columbia as a legal fellow and at the National Trust for Historic Preservation as a legal intern. Black also worked as a legal intern at a boutique trademark firm, focusing on trademark registrations.
